Christian Worldview Month

January 2017 is "Christian Worldview Month" at Pacific.  Four Sundays in a row, we will hear from special speakers during our 10AM Worship Service.
Sunday January 8:

"The Sins of our Kin" with Dr. Erin Goheen Glanville - Co-pastor of Evening Congregation Grandview Calvary Baptist Church

BIO:

Erin Goheen Glanville co-pastors at Grandview Calvary Baptist Church in Vancouver alongside her husband, Mark. Her PhD thesis in postcolonial studies explored the theology undergirding church-based activism with refugees. She has taught at Redeemer University, TWU, and McMaster University. She continues to research, write, and speak and is currently a visiting scholar at Simon Fraser University. She loves figuring out how to communicate the gospel as good news for all areas of culture, and her favourite people to work that out with right now are her two young, curious children.

Sunday January 15: 

"Seeking the Peace of the City" with Dr. Gordon T. Smith - President of Ambrose University College

This sermon will consider the meaning of Jeremiah 29 for the church and the Christian in our day -- what it means to be Christian in a secular society.   

BIO:

Gordon T. Smith is the president of Ambrose University (Calgary, Alberta), where he also teaches systematic and spiritual theology.   He is the author of a number of books, including "Called to Be Saints:   An Invitation to Christian Maturity" (IVPress, 2014).   He is married to Joella and together they have two grown sons.  Gordon is an ordained minister with The Christian & Missionary Alliance (Canada).

Sunday, January 22: 

"Out of the Depths" with Dr. Daniel Whitehead

This message will ask the questions:  What does it look like for the Church to walk with those suffering with mental illness? How do we care well when those that we love are suffering?

BIO:

Daniel is the National Director of Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries – a Ministry committed to equipping the Church in Canada to care well for those suffering with mental illness. Daniel hails from the UK, is married to Annie and has two young children, Evie and Jack. Prior to working at Sanctuary, Daniel was a Senior Pastor of a church for eight years, and is a certified mediator. His time as a pastor exposed him to many compassion and social justice ministries with regular international exposure in nations such as Russia, Albania, South Africa, Kenya and India. Daniel is, by nature, an influencer and a visionary, and he brings a great deal of infectious enthusiasm for God and His people.

Sunday, January 29:

“Who is God?” with Dr. Iain Provan - Marshall Sheppard Professor of Biblical Studies at Regent College since 1997. 

BIO:

Iain was born and educated in the U.K. and retains strong family, academic and church connections with his homeland.  He has written several books including Convenient Myths; Seriously Dangerous Religion and Against the Grain.  He is an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland.  He and his wife Lynette have four grown-up children.   Iain is also a qualified Provincial B Licence soccer coach (BC) and ARA rowing coach (UK).  His main hobby is currently fly-fishing.
